Paul Padda Featured on News 3: The Future of Voting Rights in Nevada
As a critical swing state, Nevada plays a pivotal role in national politics. Every single vote cast in the Silver State carries tremendous weight, shaping both local policies and the future of the entire country.
Recently, Paul Padda, founder of Paul Padda Law, joined Channel 3 News to discuss a landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that has sent shockwaves through the legal community. The ruling narrowed protections under the historic Voting Rights Act, a statute long considered a cornerstone of democratic fairness.

The Erosion of Voting Rights
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was designed to prevent discriminatory voting procedures and ensure equal representation for voters of color. However, the Supreme Court’s latest decision limits these protections by narrowing how congressional districts are evaluated.
During the interview, Paul Padda highlighted the gravity of this shift:
“The Voting Rights Act was passed with bipartisan support by both Democrats and Republicans to bring fairness, and this idea that, you know, a democracy should reflect the people that live in it. And what we’re going to have now is the potential for situations where you have lawmakers gerrymander to basically exclude large groups of people from certain minority groups…”
Critics of the decision warn that weakening these federal protections essentially dilutes the voices of voters in affected areas and risks turning redistricting into an aggressive partisan “arms race.”
What This Means for Nevada
Because Nevada is a diverse state where voters of color comprise more than 50% of the electorate in three of our four congressional districts, changes to federal voting laws hit close to home.
While Nevada’s current split state government makes immediate redistricting unlikely before the next census cycle, the long-term legal implications cannot be ignored. When asked whether similar gerrymandering could happen here, Padda noted:
“It could happen. Now, there’s no real protections in place under state law to avoid that, but I think historically one good thing about Nevada is it has been kind of a bipartisan state… But anything’s possible. It could happen.”
